Meet the Generating Genius Team
Dr Tony Sewell, Founder
Dr Tony Sewell (photo, above) is the founder and Director of Generating Genius. Formerly a London school teacher, Tony has spent many years as a teacher trainer working at Kingston and Leeds Universities. He has published widely on the experience of boys in Education and has been an International Consultant in Education, working fro the World Bank and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
He works between the UK and the Caribbean and has helped set up the Science, Maths and Information Technology Centre, in the Department of Education, University of the West Indies, Jamaica. A trustee of the National Museums of Science and Industry, he is often making appearances on national media: BBC Radio 4 Any Questions and Newsnight. He has recently published a book called Generating Genius that outlines why the programme has been so successful.
Dionne Lewis, Girl’s Programme Co-ordinator
With a background in Psychology and a passion for education, Dionne has acquired a wealth of knowledge and experience in the education sector undertaking roles which combine together the integral psychological and social aspects of teaching and learning. Dionne has held a range of roles working directly with young people in a variety of educational settings in mainstream and special schools at both Primary and Secondary levels.
Dionne is currently an Assistant Head of School at a state-maintained secondary school in inner city London and is also the lead co-ordinator of the PSHE and AIM Higher programmes where she has developed effective programmes of learning across the school curriculum in collaboration with corporate and community organisations to engage students in extending their aspirations to attend university, widen accessibility to a range of careers, promote community engagement, and provide a platform for young people to recognise their talents and gifts in academia.
Dr David Goldwin Pollard, Chair
David is Chairman of Generating Genius’ board of Trustees and has been a Trustee for thee years. He is particularly concerned with Generating Genius’ image and growth and with fund raising for the charity.
David was educated at Queens College, Guyana; Imperial College, London; St. John’s College, Cambridge and completed his PhD in Theoretical Physics at Imperial College aged 26. He lectured Physics and researched Solar Energy at the University of Guyana in the early 1980s. Later he returned to the UK where he conducted Industrial Physics research at BP before moving into the world of quantitative finance at Salomon Brothers in the mid 1990s.
David has been involved in public service in various roles ranging from Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association of Earley, in Reading. David currently works in a quantitative hedge fund in the Man Group.
Professor Averil Macdonald
Professor Averil Macdonald is Professor of Science Communication at the University of Reading and Regional Director of the HE STEM Programme for London and the South East, based at the University of Southampton. She is a Trustee of the National Museums of Science and Industry, Chair of the Expert Group for Women in Science reporting to BIS, a member of the Governing Council of the Institute of Physics and UK representative on the European Physical Society Forum for Science in Society.
Averil’s contribution to Science Engagement has been recognized by the award of Women of Outstanding Achievement in Science in 2007, award by the Plastics Industry for her Personal Contributions to the Industry in 2007, The Bragg Medal and Prize by the Institute of Physics in 1999 for her distinguished contribution to Physics education and promotion and an Honorary Doctorate by the University of York conferred in 2010 for her contribution to society through popularising science and supporting women in science.
Veronica Martin , (BA (Hons), MSc. (MinstF)
Veronica Martin spent fifteen years in the Advertising sector of the media industry (Voice Newspaper and Time Magazine) before dedicating herself to using her sales and marketing skills to benefit non profit organisations and charities. Over ten years, she has developed an expertise in fundraising within the non profit sector.
As a professional fundraiser specialising in winning resources and support from charitable trusts and foundations, major donors and events ranging from the London Marathon (helping to raise over £¼ million in 2003 as part of the Michael Watson MBE Marathon walk for the Brain and Spine Foundation) to charity balls and reception dinners. She has worked for many charities: Clubs for Young People (CYP), Brain and Spine Foundation, Drake Music, Motor Neurone Disease Association, Prolific Foundation, Art of Community, Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, Elizabeth Finn Care. Veronica is a Full Certificated Member of the Institute of Fundraising.
